All of a sudden life changes…….
Special thanks to the Teokotai family for sharing their story;

This inspiring story is being shared in the hope that it prevents another family going through a similar situation.

Christmas didn’t come for the Teokotai family in 2007; it was a dull & gloomy Thursday so mum decided to cook a BOIL UP (good old Kiwi tradition) with water cress, pork bones and vegetables.  The huge pot was placed on the left back ring on the element and had been simmering all day.

As the family were eating Dinner Te-arna (18mths) finished and went off to play, while Mum feed Arnika (7mths), Jayde (3 years) went off to find Te-arna and returned within minutes telling mum that she was climbing up onto the oven.  Mum placed Arnika into her high chair and quickly ran to the kitchen to investigate……. but it was to late…..

A massive crash and screams that every parent dreads!  Mum discovered her babies; the oven had fallen over onto the ground and the pot had fallen , Te-arna was stuck underneath and Jayde was on the other side trapped.

Jayde

Adrenalin kicked in, mum grabbed Te-Arna up into her arms and describes her like a ball of steam – Te-Arna’s clothes burning both of them, instincts told Mum to remove her clothing and she then placed her into a bath with the running shower water over her red body and then ran back to grab Jayde.

Mum quickly removed Jayde’s clothes, placed her also in the bath with the shower water and phoned 111.

The Fire brigade were first on the scene and performed first aid on the girls while also attending to Arnika who was still sitting in her highchair.  Te arna was screaming so much she wouldn’t sit still in the water so the next best thing was to grab a towel, soaked in water and wrap it around her body.

Ambulances were next to arrive followed by a fire truck!  Both girls were placed into different ambulances and Mum decided to go with Jayde as Te-arna was already under sedation and Jayde was in complete body shock and needed to get to hospital fast.  Arriving at Christchurch hospital Mum was informed 30 minutes later that the girls needed to be air lifted to Middlemore Hospital in Auckland.

Middlemore hospital the a team of 6-12 doctors, nurses and plastic surgeons was like a movie scene, Jayde was taken into theatre and Te-arna followed, both girls spent time in ICU with Te-arna being the longest stay.

After many operations, heartache, and tears the girls both began their slow path of recovery.  They are both fighters and this family hopes this story will inspire many others to place brackets on your Oven and Dishwasher.

Install Safety Brackets on your Oven and Dishwasher!

THANK YOU ALL, GOD BLESS AND MUCH LUV.. JAYDE AND TE-ARNA XXOOXX

New Community Resource Launched
To Raise Awareness of Drive-way Runover Prevention

Auckland has seen an increase in admissions of young children injured or killed having been run over in their own driveways. Because of this an Auckland regional working group was formed to look at how, as a region, we could bring these statistics down...more
